This year, 22 students participated in CEC's annual Literary Contest, showcasing their creativity and writing talents across multiple categories.
The contest begins each winter when the event is announced and students are given one month to refine their submissions. Once the writing period concludes, members of the English Language Arts Department review the entries and vote to determine the winners in each category.
This year’s winners are:
Best Work of Poetry: “Why Not Me?” by Jess Spry ’26
Best Short Story: “Birds Don’t Fall” by Lyla McDermott ’27
Best Essay: “College Essay” by Anna McGoldrick ’26
Each winner received a certificate of recognition and a $100 Amazon gift card in honor of their accomplishment.
In the spring, the winning works will be compiled into a hardcopy binder that will feature the students’ writing along with short biographies and photographs. The binder will be assembled with the help of former CEC student John Hall '25 and will be on display within the ELA Department for all to enjoy.
Looking ahead, there are plans to expand this initiative by publishing a yearly creative writing journal that will include the work of creative writing students as well as future Literary Contest winners.
The Literary Contest continues to provide students with an opportunity to share their voices, develop their writing skills, and be recognized for their creativity.
